Shim Chang-min, known by his stage name, Max Chang-min, is a South Korean singer, actor, and a member of the pop duo TVXQ. He debuted as a singer and member of TVXQ in December, 2003, under SM Entertainment. He was youngest among what was then the other four members of the group, and had been training since he was fourteen. When he was fourteen years old, a talent scout from S.M. Entertainment spotted Changmin while he was singing and playing badminton at the same time during gym class. The scout suggested him to audition for S.M., but Changmin had no interest in becoming a singer. However his mother, wanting a chance to meet BoA, urged Changmin to attend the casting auditions, anyway. After he passed the audition and won the Best Singer and Best Artist award at S.M.’s 6th Annual Youth Best Contest, Changmin signed with the company.

Changmin is known for his high tenor register, particularly his screams and high notes. He is also active as a lyricist, and has written for several of the band’s songs, including 2007’s “Evergreen” (Only Love), the Korean version of “Love in the Ice” (Mirotic), “Confession” (Keep Your Head Down), and “I Swear” (Catch Me). Changmin’s voice is one of the most noticeable and unique ones in K-pop according to fans and non-fans, and he stands out for his uniqueness in tone.

Changmin’s voice sits quite high in range, but he isn’t anything more than simply a light lyric tenor. His true tone is still a manly tone, however, due to the lack of chest in his mix voice, he’s been able to teach himself to sing in a much higher range than many other male K-pop vocalists, setting him apart. His voice has a piercing, bright, and light quality to it. He is one of the few male K-pop vocalists who is able to stay in such a high range constantly without great signs of fatigue over the the years.

The last time he released a song was last year, with the release of TVXQ’s new album, called New Chapter #1: The Chance of Love. The music video for the album was released on March 28, 2018, and brings in swing-inspired instrumentals to TVXQ’s sound. On December 26 of the same year, the group released an extend play record, called New Chapter #2: The Truth of Love, which is the sequel to their previous album. It is a special commemorative album for the duo, as they celebrated the momentous milestone of their 15th anniversary.
