Mattel is one of the biggest toy makers in the world, and was founded in 1945 by Elliot Handler and Harold Matson. It’s two most popular and widely-known products are Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels. In January, 2019, Mattel said that they would be partnering with BTS, and the group also talked about it during an annual awards event. The following month, Mattel officially released the dolls, which look really similar to the members’ faces and have been carefully made to have BTS members’ appearances from the ‘Idol’Β music video which released in August, 2018. In that month, the product wasn’t immediately for sale, and pre-orders were opened on July 17, 2019. the dolls are available at four global stores, Amazon, Walmart, Target, and GameStop. Besides those four stores, ARMY could pre-order them on BTS’s official merchandise applications, namely ‘Weeply’. BTSxMattel dolls sell for $ 19.99 USD.

As said above, this doll collection is inspired by the BTS’s members fashions from ‘Idol‘. Mattel also mentioned that the dolls come with 11 points of articulation, which means that they can be moved in any direction. In addition, everyone who order them can get the UNO cards with pictures of the seven members!

The day after the dolls were released, they were being hunted by fans on online shopping sites. The best-selling doll is for Jimin’s character. The figure of the 95’s singer, Jimin, showed strong sales on first day and sold out on various websites selling the product. It sold up to 800 units compared to the dolls from other members of the group.

In addition to the dolls, BTS x Mattel also worked together for a second time by releasing the miniatures of BTS’s chibi in October. The miniatures got a positive response compared to before. The chibi are exactly the same as those displayed at the “House of BTS” pop-up shop in Gangnam, Seoul, which can be bought by fans all over the world starting November 11th. But, for now, the buyers only can buy them with a pre-order system. The newly released miniatures are only of Jimin, V, J-hope, and Jungkook, but for Jungkook it will be released on November 18th.

This sale reached fantastic numbers, even equivalent to selling Barbie dolls. BTS x Mattel sales have increased from 3% to 10%.

After that, there were many opinions and reactions among ARMYs. The reactions vary greatly. Usually, fans will be happy with something that’s related to their idol, but it turns out that there are many ARMY who are disappointed and even say the dolls aren’t that similar to the BTS members. They commented on Mattel’s posts on Twitter or Instagram, for example, like these sarcastic thoughts:

“Pray for Taehyung’s Mattel doll,” or even another joked, “Personally, I think the face structure of the Mattel dolls were very impressive, however the hair is when the doll went downhill. For instance, the Kim Taehyung doll had too long of hair.”

Another ARMY responded to the criticts on Instagram commenting, “I honestly think these dolls don’t look bad!! Do you know how hard it is to make dolls?! People are being so rude and disrespective.” and another ARMY tweeted “ARMYs we can joke around and have fun, but please don’t be rude under Mattel’s posts. Hype it up or give compliments. This is mass produced after all, a kids toy. In all seriousness, Mattel has been respectful to BTS and even us (ARMY).”

Review & Unboxing

Although this doll was initially attacked by comments and criticisms that are less than satisfactory, the dolls are very salable to sell from the time the pre-orders started on the official sites! BTS RM (Kim Namjoon)

First, let’s discuss the member who is also frontment from BTS, RM. His doll’s appearance is neat, both from outfit and hair. Shiny, black hair combined with a yellow shirt with a dot pattern. The outer and pants are made in blue, plus sneakers. This looks so elegant, but still looks casual.

BTS Jin (Kim Seok-jin)

For the doll of the oldest member, Jin is made to look more casual. Although, for the inside it wears a white hoodie, but the outer and pants are made with matching, brightly-colored floral motifs. The doll’s appearance is complemented by white sneakers and blonde-colored hair.

BTS Suga (Min Yoongi)

With his brown hair, Suga’s doll iswrapped in a white shirt with a floral pattern. Like the other members, Jin also wore a suit and material pants. The white shoes were also on Suga’s doll.

BTS J-hope (Jung Hoseok)

Like RM’s doll, J-hope’s doll comes with black hair. This doll is also given a plain white shirt. For the outer layer, the jacket and pants are yellow with black and green zig-zag motifs. White shoes also complete his appearance.

BTS Jimin (Park Jimin)

This is the BTS doll from Mattel that has the biggest list of buyers. Jimin comes with a white shirt. For outwear, it wears a red suit jacket and pants with abstract motifs. Like the other BTS members, white sneakers are a great complement to all the clothes the doll is wearing,.

BTS V (Kim Taehyung)

From the looks of it, BTS’s V has curly hair with a blend of white and pink. For his outfit, V wore a white shirt with collar detail that has a picture of a heart. The shirt was combined with an abstract red suit. Black pants completed the outfit, plus white sneakers. So fascinating!

BTS Jungkook (Jeon Jung-kook)

For matters of hair, Jungkook is identical to the red color. In this Mattel doll, the red hair is retained. For the clothing, Jungkook’s doll is wearing a plain white t-shirt paired with a jacket and yellow pants with a diamond pattern. Just like other dolls, Jungkook’s doll is also wearing white sneakers that stick on his feet.

BTS x Mattel Repaint

These BTS Mattel dolls are indeed a little different from BTS characters, and because of that, Mattel got complaints from ARMY. There’s ARMY who deliberately edit their photos to look similar. Not much has changed, but many ARMY agree with the new BTS Mattel dolls edited appearance. Here’s an example!

Not only that, ARMY did a repainting on the doll’s faces and hair. This was done because ARMY felt dissatisfied because the doll faces weren’t same as the real group members. ARMY repainted the doll’s faces, erasing the eyes and eyebrows and repainting them with a shape similar to the BTS members. They also styled the hair to make it look good and not too long.

For example, in the video below that was shared by a Youtuber or ARMY!

She did repainting on J-hope’s doll. She started by styling the hair, forming the eyebrows and eyes, and went on to changing the shape of the face and jawline and adding nose contours similar to J-hope.

This repainting isn’t only changing the face and styling the hair, but also changing the doll’s hair color and clothes. This isn’t done solely to change, but the doll is made like BTS members who do their daily activities as idols, such as meeting with fans, photoshoots and do the shows.

ARMY really love the repainted dolls, but despite that, the dolls made by Mattel are also very in-demand and sold old in a short time!
