Who doesn’t know Super Junior, BIG BANG, SNSD, 2NE1, Wonder Girls, BTS or EXO? There are still many Korean artists and singers who are loved by teenagers. Many young people think that group members from Korea have good-looking and beautiful and handsome faces also fashionable looks. For the Korean public, the real flow of pop has not been very recent. In the 1980s, Japanese pop (J-Pop) had entered the country. However, this genre only got a wide place in the Korean public after the presence of K-Pop which began in the early 1990s. The term K-Pop itself was only popular in the 2000s, replacing the term Gayo which referred to local Korean pop music.
One of the first people to popularize it was Jeong Hyeon-cheol, a singer and songwriter of rock metal, which is widely known by the name Seo Taiji. Taiji then entered the genre of American pop music, which turned out to be liked by his fans. Seo Taiji & Boys was the first modern band to be very successful in the Ginseng Country music industry.
This success was later glimpsed by a record producer named Lee Soo-man who was educated in the United States. He is none other than the owner of SM Studio in the Gangnam area, Seoul, which he founded in 1989. The success story of SM Entertainment was soon followed by the emergence of music companies and other K-Pop groups.
Former Seo Taiji & Boys member Yang Hyun-suk formed YG Entertainment in 1996. Then followed by Park Jin-young or JY Park who founded JYP Entertainment in 1997. HOT and a number of other groups that emerged in the 1990s could be categorized as the first generation of K-Pop.
After that, in the mid to late 2000s, new groups were born as the second generation. Some of them, Super Junior, TVXQ, and Girls’ Generation or also known as SNSD. In this era, JYP Entertainment gave birth to Wonder Girls, G.O.D, 2PM, and 2AM. The glory of K-Pop continues in the era of the third generation. SM Entertainment formed the new group EXO. Then YG Entertainment also brought up a hit girl group, such as Big Bang, 2NE1, Winner, iKON, and Blackpink. It was in this era that BTS also emerged which was phenomenal under the auspices of Big Hit Entertainment.
K-Pop Groups
K-Pop Boy Group
In the world of K-Pop, there are things called idol group generations. Although no one has ever made a definition of the division of the generation, in general, the division of this generation will be based on the era and scale of activity of the group concerned. The first generation of K-Pop idol groups are usually regarded as those who debuted and were active around the 90s until the early 2000s. For Boy Groups there were Shinhwa, H.O.T, Sechs Kies, and G.O.D.

BIGBANG
Big Bang is a second-generation boy group from South Korea formed by YG Entertainment. The group officially debuted on August 19th, 2006, with five members, namely G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, Daesung, and Seungri. But as of 2019, Big Bang is left with only four members, GD, T.O.P, Taeyang, and Daesung because Seungri decided to leave the group due to scandal and controversy in 2019.
Big Bang’s legendary song that is timeless, “Haru Haru,” was released in 2008. Together with “Lies,” “Haru Haru” is among the legendary Bigbang songs and is still a mark today. Not only favored by many K-Pop fans, when it was released, but the song also received positive comments from other circles, such as from Billboard who called “Haru Haru” Bigbang’s experimental masterpiece and made the song the second-best song ever released by G-Dragon and the members.
The song was composed by the leader, G-Dragon with Daishi Dance and successfully won Bigbang an award at the 2008 Mnet Asian Music Awards in the Best Male Group and Artist of the Year categories.

Super Junior
Super Junior is a boy group from South Korea formed in 2005 by producer Lee Soo-man of SM Entertainment record company. They are also dubbed by the media and the Korean Music Awards as “Kings of the Hallyu Wave” because of their important contribution to the spread of the Korean Wave. This group consisted of thirteen members at its peak. Super Junior was originally debuted with twelve members, consisting of the chairman Leeteuk, Heechul, Han Geng, Yesung, Kangin, Shindong, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Siwon, Donghae, Ryeowook, and Kibum. Kyuhyun then joined the group in 2006.
“Sorry Sorry” is placed high on the list of legendary songs Super Junior released in 2009. After “Sorry Sorry,” “Mr. Simple” is another one on the list of legendary Super Junior songs. Thanks to the song “Mr. Simple,” Super Junior won several prestigious awards such as the 2011 Melon Music Awards, the 2011 MAMA, and the 2011 Seoul Music Awards.

2PM
2PM is a South Korean boy group formed by JYP Entertainment. The current members are Jun. K, Nichkhun, Taecyeon, Wooyoung, Junho, and Chansung. Former group leader Jay Park officially left the group in early 2010. 2PM made their official debut on September 4th, 2008.
In January 2011, 2PM released one of their best-known songs to date, “Hands Up.” This song is part of their second album of the same title. “Hands Up” is one of the legendary songs from 2PM.

EXO
EXO is a South Korean-Chinese boy group based in Seoul, with nine members: Suho, Baekhyun, Chanyeol, D.O., Kai, Sehun, Xiumin, Lay, and Chen. The group was formed by SM Entertainment in 2011 and debuted in 2012. BTS, or also known as Bangtan Boys, is a seven-member boy band from South Korea formed by Big Hit Entertainment. The name then became the Beyond the Scene in July 2017. BTS made their debut on June 13th, 2013.

Stray Kids
Stray Kids is a South Korean boy group formed by JYP Entertainment through the 2017 reality show Stray Kids, the same as the group name. The group initially consisted of nine members: Bang Chan, Woojin, Lee Know, Changbin, Hyunjin, Han, Felix, Seungmin, and I.N. They released their pre-debut mini-album Mixtape in January 2018 and officially debuted on March 26th with “I Am Not.” Woojin left the group in October 2019.
The legendary song of Stray Kids is “District 9,” which was their debut song. Since the music video for the “District 9” single was released, Stray Kids instantly became a hot topic of conversation. SEVENTEEN, or SVT, is a boy group from South Korea formed by Pledis Entertainment. The thirteen members are divided into three different units to display their respective specialization expertise: hip-hop unit, vocal unit and performance unit. SEVENTEEN debuted on May 26th, 2015.

NCT
NCT is a boy group from South Korea formed by SM Entertainment. NCT stands for Neo Culture Technology, a term coined by SM Entertainment’s founder, Lee Soo-man, to describe the concept of this group which has an infinite number of members divided into several sub-units based in various cities in the world. This group consists of 21 members as of January 2019.
The first unit of the group, NCT U, debuted in April 2016 with the digital singles “The 7th Sense” and “Without You.” The second unit, NCT 127, based in Seoul debuted in July 2016 with the mini-album NCT #127. The third unit, NCT Dream, debuted in August 2016 with the digital single “Chewing Gum.” The fourth unit, WayV, based in China, debuted on January 17th, 2019, with the single album The Vision.

Monsta X is a South Korean boy group formed by Starship Entertainment through the NO.MERCY survival program on Mnet in 2015. Girls’ Generation is a girl group from South Korea formed by SM Entertainment in 2007. They are also known as SNSD or SoShi, both of which are abbreviations of the name of this group in Korean. This group consists of eight members: Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun. On September 30th, 2014, SM Entertainment officially announced that Jessica was no longer active in Girls’ Generation.

T-ARA
T-Ara is a girl group from South Korea formed by Core Contents Media or now better known as MBK Entertainment in 2009. The “Roly Poly” song was T-ARA’s legendary song. This song comes from the album John Travolta Wannabe, has two versions: the original version and the Copacabana version.

BLACKPINK
BLACKPINK is a South Korean girl group formed by YG Entertainment, consisting of members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa. The group debuted on August 8th, 2016. BLACKPINK’s legendary songs are “Whistle” and “Boombayah,” both of which are considered to be their debut singles. “Whistle” is the first number one BLACKPINK song in South Korea.
In addition, “Boombayah” became their first number-one single on the Billboard World Digital Songs chart, which earned a record as the debut music video most watched by Korean artists. With their commercial success in the first five months, they obtained the New Artist of the Year at the 31st Golden Disc Awards and 26th Seoul Music Awards.

(G) I-DLE is a South Korean girl group formed by Cube Entertainment in 2018. The group consists of six members: Miyeon, Minnie, Soojin, Soyeon, Yuqi, and Shuhua. They debuted on May 2nd, 2018, with the first mini-album titled I Am. The legendary song of (G) I-DLE was “Latata” which is their debut song. This song successfully won them various awards and brought trophies in the weekly music program.

TWICE
TWICE is a girl group formed by JYP Entertainment through the reality show SIXTEEN in 2015. TWICE consists of nine members: Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu. They debuted on October 20th, 2015, with the mini-album The Story Begins.
The song “Cheer Up” is considered to be one of the legendary TWICE songs, because TWICE managed to gain fame in 2016 when “Cheer Up” was released. In addition, this song was ranked number 1 on the Gaon Digital Chart and became the best selling single in the same year. The song also won the Song of the Year title at major music awards events such as the Melon Music Awards and the Mnet Asian Music Awards.
