Once Again BTS Is Breaking the Barrier
After a series of achievements and awards that Korean boy band Bangtan Sonyeondan (otherwise known as BTS) hit, starting from the best-selling album in Korean history, the second best-selling artists of 2018 worldwide according to the IFPI’s Global Artist Chart, as well as the only non-English speaking artist to enter the chart, winning “Top Social Artist” three years in a row and Top Duo/Group at the 26th Billboard Music Awards, featured on Time‘s international cover as “Next Generation Leaders,” appeared in the magazine’s 25 most influential people on the internet (2017–2019) and Time‘s 100 most influential people in the world (2019), we think that there is not an achievement left for BTS. But, who are we kidding? When it comes to this group, the phrase “the sky is the limit” is best to represent them.
On the 2020 Grammy Awards, notably known as the most prestigious music awards in the world, BTS were the first Korean group to get invited and make an appearance at the event, marking their name in the Korean music industry history. BTS Grammy Red Carpet Interview
As usual, before entering the Grammy stage, BTS did an interview with a number of media outlets who had been waiting for their presence. BTS members were asked about their new album titled Map of the Soul: 7. As is known, the highly anticipated album was released on February 21st, 2020.
BTS members expressed their hopes to collaborate with other top artists, among which is popular pop icon Ariana Grande. As is known, on January 23rd, 2020, Ariana Grande posted a picture of her with BTS behind the Grammy stage. “Look who I met on rehearsal,” she wrote in the caption.
In the interview, the leader, RM, expressed his feelings of being able to meet the singer who is often called Ari. He also revealed how the chronology of their meeting backstage and his hopes to make a song together with her.
“We saw her, she also saw us so (the meeting) happened. Please collaborate with us Ari,” said RM who was followed by the enthusiasm of other members.
BTS were scheduled to perform at local events in the days after the award ceremony as well. BTS were to go on stage at an event titled “iHeartRadio LIVE with BTS presented by HOT TOPIC” on January 27th, 2020. They also got the chance to perform their new song “Black Swan” for the first time on The Late Late Show with James Corden on January 28th, 2020.
BTS and Lil Nas Grammy Performance
BTS were one of the guest stars at the 2020 Grammy Awards held on Sunday, January 26th, 2020, in Los Angeles, United States.
Unfortunately, BTS did not have their own stage, but performed a duet with American rapper Lil Nas singing “Old Town Road” and “Rodeo.”
Not only with BTS, but Lil Nas also made a duet with Billy Ray Cyrus, Mason Ramsey, Diplo, and Young Thug & Nas.
Even though BTS were only singing for less than two minutes, the members still looked happy and professional during their performance.

A.R.M.Y Disappointment Of The Grammys
Having anticipated BTS’ performance at the 2020 Grammy Awards, BTS fans, or ARMY, felt broken-hearted when realizing that BTS performed for only 2 minutes in the show. At first, they thought that their favorite idol group would perform their latest song titled “Black Swan” at the event.
“Today’s big news is very tragic and heartbreaking, I think the song “Spring Day” will be perfect when it is performed by BTS,” one fan wrote.
“Still can’t accept the fact that BTS didn’t have a solo stage, they deserve better than this appearance, they didn’t even become themselves, because the Grammys always takes advantage of artists like that,” another wrote.
“I don’t know why, but I feel like crying when I see BTS members still so humble even after the Grammys did something stupid,” said another.
A lot of K-netizens criticized the Grammy Awards for their treatment of BTS.

BTS shared their thoughts on attending the 2020 Grammy Awards!
On January 26th, 2020, local time, BTS walked the red carpet and performed at the coveted American music awards show where they joined Lil Nas X, Billy Ray Cyrus, Diplo, Mason Ramsey, and Nas for a special performance of “Old Town Road.”
After the ceremony, BTS returned to their hotel and held a V Live broadcast to talk to their fans.
RM began, “Although we didn’t get a lot of screen time, I’m really thankful that all of the members tried their best and did a great job.” V commented, “Going to the Grammys is an achievement in and of itself.” Jin commented, “It was really fun,” and J-Hope added, “It was cool.” Suga replied, “Just the fact that we performed [is amazing]” and Jimin said, “It’s unreal. The things that are happening right now are surreal.”
RM explained, “They say that we’re the first Koreans to perform on the Grammys stage,” and the members applauded their latest achievement. The BTS leader continued, “One day, we really want to put on our own performance,” with J-Hope echoing, “That’s exactly what I thought when the performance ended.”
Suga expressed gratitude and offered his members perspective on their latest performance. The rapper asked, “Do you guys not remember when we first went to Billboard [Music Awards]? We only received an award at the time. There’s a need for steps [for how things progress]. Since we collaborated [on a performance] this time, we can carefully [hope for our own performance next time].” RM humorously said, “Are there any Recording Academy members watching right now?” and asked them to keep them in mind next time.
Suga commented, “People who now know this but it’s really hard,” and the BTS members discussed the difficulties of receiving a Grammy nomination. Referring to how they became official voting members of the Recording Academy last year, RM and Jin stated that they wrote down “BTS” on their ballots.
The members then excitedly talked about meeting some of their favorite artists including Nas, Usher, and Ariana Grande, as well as celebrity friends such as Khalid, DJ Khaled, and Camila Cabello. Suga revealed, “Nas said that this was also his first time at the Grammys,” and reemphasized how tough it is to earn a Grammy nomination and a chance to perform on the award stage. Jin commented, “We made our Grammy performance debuts together!”
Jimin revealed, “This was our first time featuring on stage with others,” and the BTS members praised RM for his “Seoul Town Road” remix. Suga commented, “Since it was a collaboration stage, I didn’t feel nervous at all and it was really fun.” Jungkook added, “It was a good experience.”
Sharing some backstage stories, Jin said, “People prayed before going on stage.” Jimin added, “We also gathered in a circle with Lil Nas, Diplo, and everyone else to pray for a good performance.” J-Hope described that it felt as if they were preparing for war, and V said he gained a lot of energy from this pre-stage ritual.
RM also brought up host Alicia Keys’ performance where she sang a song incorporating names of many singers and different genres that were in attendance of this year’s awards show. He said, “BTS and K-pop were mentioned during her performance. I felt a thrill,” and V mentioned that he was a longtime fan of the singer. “I somehow became BTS, so I feel excited whenever I see and hear the name ‘BTS,’” added Jimin.
While talking about seeing Usher, J-Hope revealed with a laugh how shy RM was acting in front of Nas. RM explained, “Nas is my role model,” and Jimin revealed, “My hands were sweating when I saw Usher.”
The BTS members, in unison, expressed hopes to return to the Grammy Awards next year. Jungkook silently prayed while RM stated, “With our own song next time.” Jimin said, “I thought about this a lot watching other artists’ great performances, and it really made me want to perform our own songs.” Jungkook revealed, “I realize a lot of things when I come to overseas award shows.”
Jimin added, “Our performances are really great, so I thought a lot about how I want us to perform our songs too.” Agreeing with Jimin, Jungkook said, “I thought a lot about how I wanted to show them on this stage.”
BTS wrapped up the broadcast with champagne and cake to celebrate the momentous occasion.
BTS next appeared for an interview at the “iHeartRadio LIVE with BTS” on January 27th, 2020, followed by the first-ever performance of their latest single “Black Swan” on The Late Late Show with James Corden on January 28th, 2020. BTS’ newest album MAP OF THE SOUL: 7 was released on February 21st, 2020, followed by the lead single’s music video on February 28th.

BTS’ “ON” MV Soars Past 100 Million Views In Less Than A Month!
On February 28th, 2020, BTS’ music video for “ON” debuted with 43.8 million views in the first 24 hours after its release, making it the seventh-largest debut in YouTube history. On March 26th, 2020, at approximately 5 a.m. KST, the music video had surpassed 100 million views.
