About In The Name of Love

The Guardian

CL’s new album, In The Name of Love, is her first EP after her departure from YG Entertainment on November 8th, 2019. Their decision was based on mutual agreement, and YG Entertainment thanked CL for her work as 2NE1 member since 2009.

In the Name of Love was released on December 17, 2019, and included 6 single tracks. The album was meant as part of her solo project, and it was compiled from several unreleased tracks. The six tracks on the album are: Rewind, Done, Paradox, I Quit, One and Only, and THNX. All the single tracks from the album reached a peak position ranging from No. 16 to No. 3 on the Billboard Music Chart.

Two tracks from In the Name of Love were released before the actual album release date. Every single from the EP included the actual date for when the song was written.

Each of the singles showed her musical style and her preferences in making music. She combined T&B tunes with rap and ballads. All of the singles were a description of herself, her past, and her story.

The date from each song’s title marked her preparation and intention to debut as solo artist. The first single, Done, was written on December 1st, 2016, while the last track, THNX, was written on May 19, 2019.

CL worked as the executive producer for both of her new songs. Lyrics and song writing were the result of collaborations with Tokki, Delacey, and Michael Pollack. Judging by the lyrics and the titles of CL songs, fans speculated whether the lyrics were against her former company, YG Entertainment.

Comeback Schedule

Before releasing her first EP, she released various single tracks while promoting as a member of 2NE1. Her most popular singles are The Baddest Female, MTBD, and Hello Bitches. The Baddest Female sold 549.324 copies and reached the No. 4 position in the Korean music charts.

Not very long after the news of her separation from YG Entertainment, CL started releasing video clip teasers every week for two weeks before of date of the album’s release. The teasers were posted on her Instagram and YouTube accounts ahead of the release. Her comeback was scheduled on December 17th, 2019, one and a half months after her departure from YG Entertainment.

Promotion

After deciding to end her contract with YG Entertainment, CL remained without any management company. She decided against joining other management, and started working on her own. On her EP album project, CL asked along former 2NE1 members Minzy, Sandara Park, and Park Bom. Other artists and TV personalities also appeared on her music videos, such as former Wonder Girls’ member Sohee, singer Lee Hi, senior singer-actress Uhm Jung-hwa, BIGBANG’s Taeyang, TV personality Kim Young-chul, fashion designer Alexander Wang, and model Kiko Mizuhara. She released three music videos before releasing the full version of her EP In The Name of Love.

Chart Rank Progress

Paradox debuted and peaked at No. 192 on the Gaon Download Chart, but it didn’t enter the Gaon Digital Chart. None of the singles from CL’s EP In the Name of Love reached the peak position on either the Korean and Japanese music charts. However, all six singles from the album peaked between No 3. and No. 16 on three different weeks on the Billboard Music Chart. Since 2NE1’s disbandment, CL has spent most of her time performing in the USA. Perhaps that was the reason why the singles didn’t do as well domestically.

Fans and Public Reaction

Judging by the lyrics and the titles of CL songs, fans speculated whether the lyrics were against her former company, YG Entertainment. In I Quit, she wrote “It is the limit. There is no point in winning. I quit. I don’t quit easily, but I had enough after all I did for you.”

Fans also praised her music videos because she used model to translate the lyrics into sign language. Her album was greeted with a warm response, and fans had been waiting for her music.
