What Happened to Minzy After 2NE1?

It has been a while since our favorite OG and girl crush group 2NE1 disbanded. Our favorite maknae, Gong Min-ji, going by the stage name Minzy, is currently pursuing a solo career after she left YG Entertainment in 2016. She has been doing well when she released her first solo EP Minzy Work 01: “Uno,” in April 2017.

But, all of a sudden, we hear a hot piece of news about her filing a lawsuit against her new agency, Music Works. Wait, what? We know, we know, that you must be confused with all the teas and dramas that are going on between Minzy and her agency. Check out what we have discovered by scrolling down the article below and find out more about the details!

Minzy Career Story With Music Works

Starting from May 2016, Minzy began her solo career when she signed with Music Works, a subsidiary label under CJ E&M’s. She was going straight to prepare for her solo album at that time and she was deeply interested in exploring many different types of music. She wanted to be a versatile singer and didn’t want to limit herself to one specific genre.

Her new label stated in 2016: “We are focusing on producing a first solo album which can portray all of Gong Minzy’s talent and potential. We will continue the preparations without being chased by time.”

Music Works was not only preparing for her singing career, but also her other activities. Minzy became a cast member of the second season of Sister’s Slam Dunk in January 2017, along with Kim Sook, Hong Jin-kyung, Kang Ye-won, Han Chae-young, Hong Jin-young, and Jeon So-mi.

Two months later, in March 2017, Minzy released her first solo single, “I Wanted To Love” as part of the soundtrack of the MBC drama The Rebel.

It all seemed to be going well, especially since on April 17th, 2017, she finally released her solo debut EP Minzy Work 01. “Uno,” along with title track “Ninano.” One year later, on December 1st, 2018, she also released her first English language solo single “All Of You Say.”

It turns out, one year after the release of her solo single, Minzy filed a lawsuit against her agency.

Minzy Lawsuit Against Music Works

Quoting from Soompi, Minzy has reportedly filed an injunction against her agency, The Music Works Entertainment.

On October 28th, 2019, The Kukmin Ilbo reported that Minzy had applied for an injunction to suspend her contract with Music Works on September 25th, 2019. She has also reportedly put in a claim for 50 million won (about $43,000) against the agency.

According to the Kukmin Ilbo, the court interviewed Minzy’s representatives and Music works’ representatives and completed all interrogations on October 18th, 2019.

A source from the agency responded, “We are currently checking the contents of the report claiming that Gong Minzy requested an injunction to suspend her exclusive contract last month.”

Minzy Loses The Lawsuit

Unfortunately, on December 4th, 2019, it was revealed that the court denied Minzy’s request for an injunction to suspend her exclusive contract with The Music Works.

According to a report by Xportsnews made on December 4th, 2019, the court recently denied Minzy’s request for the injunction and the claim, signifying that Minzy’s exclusive contract with Music Works will continue as is.

A source from Music Works also confirmed, “It is true that Gong Minzy’s request for an injunction to suspend her exclusive contract has been denied. We will work to reach an amicable agreement with [Minzy] by seeking solutions through extensive conversations with her.”

Following the rejection of her request for an injunction to suspend her exclusive contract with The Music Works, Minzy has spoken up through a statement on her Instagram.

She posted the following on December 4th, 2019:

“I think I will have to enter a new legal dispute with my agency that will not be a short one. When I signed the contract, the agency promised at least four albums a year and promised to provide as much support as possible. However, I have only had one album for the past four years, and they have barely provided support for my activities. I have not been shown the statement of accounts a single time, and I did not receive even one won of profits.

More than money, it is the most important for me to be able to continue promoting as an artist. As a result, I hoped to resolve [the situation] quickly by settling with the agency or through an injunction, but it did not go smoothly, so now I can only take legal action in order for the truth to be revealed. At least for my fans who always support me and cheer me on, I will handle this with strength and overcome it. I promise to always show diligence and confidence both on and off stage.”
