Kang Mi-na’s Appearance on Mnet’s Produce 101
In January, 2016, Kang Mina and fellow trainees Kim Na-young and Kim Se-jeong, represented Jellyfish Entertainment on the reality survival show Produce 101 for the chance to debut in a new Mnet girl-group.
The program came to an end on April 1, 2016, and the final line-up for the gir- group I.O.I was announced. It was made up of the top 11 poll-winners from the show. Kang Mina finished ninth overall, with 173,762 votes, becoming an official member of the girl-group.
Kang Mi-na’s Debut in IOI
Mina made her debut as one of members of IOI. The group was initially composed of eleven members chosen from the pool of 101 trainees from various entertainment companies: Lim Na-young, Kim Chung-ha, Kim Se-jeong, Jung Chae-yeon, Zhou Jieqiong, Kim So-hye, Yoo Yeon-jung, Choi Yoo-jung, Kang Mi-na, Kim Do-yeon and Jeon So-mi.
IOI was officially debuted on May 4, 2016, with the release of their first album, Chrysalis, accompanied with a music video for the title track “Dream Girls”. The song was a trap pop dance track co-written by Eru and Paul with rap lyrics written by members Lim Na-young and Choi Yoo-jung. On May 5, the group held their debut stage on Mnet’s M Countdown, performing the title track and “Knock Knock Knock”. On the same day, the group held their debut showcase and fan meeting at Jangchung Gymnasium in Seoul.

On June 10, 2016, YMC Entertainment revealed that Kang would not be taking part in I.O.I’s unit promotions, but would instead return to her agency to debut and promote with the upcoming girl-group, Gugudan. In July, 2017, a Gugudan sub-group called Gugudan 5959 was formed, with Mina and fellow member Hye-yeon. They debuted with the single “Ice Chu” on August 10, 2017.
In June, 2018, a Gugudan sub-group called Gugudan Semina was formed with Mina, Sejeong, and Nayoung. They debuted with the release of their self-titled single album on July 10, 2018.
Kang Mi-na Becoming an Actress
Mina made her acting debut in the MBC romantic comedy series Children of the 20th Century in 2017, acting as the younger counterpart of Han Ye-seul (Sa Jin-jin), an idol turned actress who was adored by many. Despite her good looks and fame, she had never dated before.
That same year, she played her first lead role in the 2-episode tvN drama History of Walking Upright.
