All You Need To Know About Big Bang’s Maknae Line, “Daesung”
Kang Dae-seong was born on April 26, 1989, in Itaewon, South Korea. He better known by the stage names Daesung and D-Lite. He’s a singer, actor and presenter from South Korea and a member of the music group Big Bang. He’s released several solo singles in South Korea under the record label YG Entertainment, including “솜사탕” (“Cotton Candy”) and “Baby Don’t Cry”, which finished at numbers 1 and 3 on the Korean Gaon Chart.
Since 2013, Daesung has also released one single and three Japanese solo albums under YGEX. His first album, D’s Cover, won number 2 on Japan’s Oricon Daily and Weekly Album Ladder. Meanwhile, D’slove and Delight both hit number 1 on the Oricon Daily Album Chart. Following the success of the albums, Daesung has completed several concert tours throughout Japan.
Although his parents were strongly against the idea of him becoming a singer, Daesung pursued a singing career and was eventually recruited by YG Entertainment after auditioning. He later appeared on a reality show which documented the formation of Big Bang with himself and five other trainees: G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, Seungri, and So-1 (Hyunseung). Hyunseung was eventually dropped and Big Bang debuted in 2006 with five members. Big Bang made their first appearance as a group on August 19, 2006, at YG Family’s 10th Anniversary concert. On September 23, 2006, they had their debut performance on a television broadcast.
Big Bang’s debut was fairly successful, with their first single netting sales of over 40,000 copies. It spawned several airplay titles, including “La La La”, “We Belong Together” and “Forever with You”, which featured label-mate Park Bom. Daesung also recorded his first solo song, “Try Smiling” (Korean: 웃어본다; Revised Romanization: Useo Bonda), for Big Bang’s first album Since 2007. The group’s breakthrough came with the release of their first extended play, Always (2007), which included the number one song “Lies” (Korean: 거짓말; Revised Romanization: Geojitmal). The song went on to top major Korean music charts for a record-breaking seven consecutive weeks, and won the group the Song of the Year award at the 9th Mnet Korean Music Festival. Their following EPs followed their predecessor’s footsteps: Hot Issue yielded “Last Farewell” (Korean: 마지막 인사; Revised Romanization: Majimak Insa), while Stand Up spawned “Day by Day” (Korean: 하루하루; Revised Romanization: Haru Haru); both singles were chart-toppers.
Shortly after the group’s debut, Daesung was diagnosed with voice chord nodules. For nearly a year, he struggled with his voice and developed sociophobia and stage fright. However, he was able to recover with the help of fellow singer and label-mate Gummy, who had been previously diagnosed with the illness, and the two became close because of this situation. Before the release of Big Bang’s second album, Daesung’s condition improved drastically.
Big Bang’s Daesung Starts His Military Service
Big Bang’s member Daesung reportedly began his first mandatory military day on Tuesday (13/3). He became the fourth member of the boy-band to undergo military service.
Daesung arrived at the South Korean Military 27th Infantry Division at Hwacheon, 118 kilometers northeast of Seoul. After a five-week training session, Daesung was assigned to the military unit where he is serving his remaining military service. The military mandatory program imposed on South Korean men would be undertaken by Daesung for the next two years.
Daesung fans made remarks for their idols before the Big Bang members went through military service. The fans expressed their temporary farewell saying “I will wait for you. See you again,” by shouting and through a number of writings. For the farewell remarks, Daesung was flattered. He also gave a sign of respect to the fans who released themselves as compulsory military service.
Previously, Daesung’s participation in military service was preceded by his colleague in Big Bang, Taeyang.
Daesung once expressed his desire to start his military service at the same time as other Bigbang personnel, so he voluntarily registered last year. Daesung had a busy year throughout 2017. Not only had he released a solo album and toured 18 cities in Japan for concerts, he also held shows with other Big Bang personnel.
Yonhap reported, with the entry of Daesung, Seungri was the only Big Bang member who had not yet enrolled in the mandatory military program.
Military Obligation, Big Bang’s Daesung Entered the Military Hospital
Big Bang’s vocalist Daesung was hospitalized in the middle of his mandatory military service. On Wednesday (23/5), Kyunghyang (via Naver) reported that Daesung was hospitalized at Chuncheon Army Hospital.
Responding to this news, the Chuncheon Army Hospital commented, “It is true that he [Daesung] was hospitalized. He has been discharged from this hospital now,” said one of the staff at the Hospital. The hospital did not reveal the reason why Daesung had to be rushed to the Chuncheon Army Hospital, because it was personal information.
In mid-March, Daesung arrived at the South Korean Military 27th Infantry Division at Hwacheon, 118 kilometers northeast of Seoul. After a five-week training session, he was then assigned to a military unit where he served the remainder of his military service.
Not only Daesung, the leader of boy-group Big Bang, G-Dragon, was reportedly at a university hospital in Seoul to undergo ankle surgery. He is still in his mandatory military service.
Chosun TV reported that in mid-April G-Dragon had received treatment for his right ankle at the same hospital. According to the report, ankle surgery was not due to an injury that occurred while undergoing a military service program. Sources from the hospital and the military said that G-Dragon had pain in his ankle before applying for military service.
