Moonshine tells the story of the lives of young people in the Joseon era when the prohibition against alcohol was in full swing. The storyline centers on the love story of illegal alcoholic nobleman Kang Ro-seo (played by Hyeri) and the principled superintendent Nam Young (played by Yoo Seung-ho).

Earlier in the first episode, Kang Ro-seo was frustrated because his older brother Kang Hae-soo (played by Bae Yoo-ram) had his family in huge debt. Not knowing how to pay such a large sum of money, Kang Ro-seo happened to come to a secret pub selling moonshine (illegal alcohol) and witness a new world. Then secretly, she began to make alcohol that could make her a living.
Kang Ro-seo and Geum Yi (played by Seo Ye-hwa) are dressed as men to disguise themselves when selling liquor. They are in a beautiful flower garden with crown prince Lee Pyo (played by Byeon Woo-seok) who becomes a customer.
