First Announcement

Ever since SM Entertainment made the announcement of Irene and Seulgi’s teaming up to debut as a subunit of the main band with the track “Monster,” ReVeluvs have been excited to hear more about this project.

The news was first delivered on April 21st, 2020, by SPOTV which said that Irene and Seulgi are currently in the final stages of preparation for their album. Previously, the two idols had teamed up together for the “Be Natural” performance video, when both were the members of SMROOKIES SR14G.

The official announcement was then uploaded by SM Entertainment on various platforms including Red Velvet’s official Twitter on May 26th, 2020. The teaser was not a photo of the two members, but their subunit logo.

The logo is white writing with the initials of Irene’s and Seulgi’s names in a circle, with a black background. When viewed the writing forms ampersand, or what we know as the sign standing for and.

IRENE & SEULGI is the first subunit of Red Velvet ever. Previously, these two members showcased their various charms and vocal skills through collaboration stages and original soundtracks. Irene herself has been known as a rapper and visual of the group, while Seulgi is believed to be one of the main vocalists with her sweet voice. So, it is no wonder that their debut is celebrated by fans.

Both on Twitter and Instagram, fans welcomed the announcement of this subunit with great enthusiasm. On Instagram, this subunit post is broken up into nine posts, and in each box, there are thousands of comments.

After SM Entertainment released the logo of the Irene and Seulgi’s subunit’s debut, Korean netizens spotted and discussed the similarity of Irene and Seulgi’s subunit’s logo to one of an existing brand, namely Joseph & Stacy.

They found that the symbol & and the letters I and S represent the initials of Irene’s and Seulgi’s names and later found the similarity of the logo to the logo of the brand Joseph & Stacey that combines the letters J and S to form the & symbol.

As can be seen in the Pann website, Korean netizens commented on the similarity of the two logos:

“If you protested earlier with the fandom name of CRAVITY, why do you deny the similarity of this logo? Everyone can say that the two logos look the same.”

“Look at the hypocritical attitudes of people who previously even protested the fandom name Luvity of boy group CRAVITY.”

“The brand must have also registered copyright. Companies should think about it carefully. If it’s a problem, the brand only needs to sue SM,” and various other comments.
