Everything You Should Know About South Korean Survival Program Created By YG Entertainment – Mix Nine
Mix Nine, or MIXNINE, is a South Korean survival reality program aired by JTBC. In this program, YG Entertainment founder and producer, Yang Hyun-suk, visits several music agencies throughout South Korea to look for new K-Pop stars. The final component of the program is a competition between the men’s and women’s teams, and the winning group gets to debut as an idol group under YG Entertainment.

About The Show
Concept
Mix Nine is a collaborative project between director Han Dong-chul, producer and founder of YG Entertainment Yang Hyun-suk, and also JTBC station. Han Dong-chul, who was the executive producer of the first two seasons of Mnet’s Produce 101 originally came up with the concept for the third season of the program. The program has 400 auditions from more than 70 agencies, visited by Yang Hyun-suk and also by other guest judges. That includes K-Pop trainees and little-known idols who seek further attention. According to Yang Hyun-suk, their good looks and pleasant personality are some of his favorites in choosing trainees, even though they are not a requirement. 170 trainees were selected by Yang Hyun-suk and guest judges CL, Zion.T, Seungri, and Taeyang.
After the agency tour ended, the trainees were divided into four classes (debut team, A, B, and C) to train and compete in the ranking mission which is assessed by a combination of judge evaluation and audience selection. For the trainees, several artists were recruited for the program. Vocal trainer and singer Ha Dong-kyun and singer Suran were responsible for vocal training. In addition, rapper Swings was their rap trainer, while YG Entertainment’s dancers Kwon Young-deuk and Kwon Young-don were in charge of training. With nine members each, the final male team will fight against the final female team. The selected members will promote with a group for seven months.

Pre-show and Promotions
On September 14th, 2016, JTBC announced an upcoming press conference that would take place on September 19th, 2016. On that day, the program’s producers Han Dong-chul and Yoo Sung-mo attended a press conference held at the JTBC Building, and confirmation of the premiere of the program was announced on October 29th, 2017. On September 25th, 2017, Noh Hong-cheol was announced as the host. About a month later, JTBC released a representative picture of the program on October 11th, 2017; the concept ‘Save a Shining Boy and Girl’ was printed with the logo of ‘9’. On the same day, another teaser video, where singer Zion.T was announced as one of the judges of the program was released.
The day before the premiere, the production presentation was held at a hotel near Hakdong Station. Yang Hyun-suk and Han Dong-cheol, along with Seungri and Zion.T attended the presentation. On the same day, the participants sang and danced with the theme song released. On November 19th, 2018, two different versions of the song and music video were released. Three different song versions were released as a whole: the boy version was led by Hyojin from ONF, the girl version was led by Lee Su-jin from Fave Entertainment, and the joint version was conducted by the two teams. Produced by Teddy, “Just Dance” is reported to be the first production song given to a non-YG Entertainment group or artist.

The lyrics of “Hush” are written by Kamen Rider and Jung Il-hoon from BtoB; the lyrics of “Like A Star” are written by MC Mong and Minjae; and those of “Dangerous Girl” are written by Kim Do-hoon, Lee Sang-ho, and Hwasa from Mamamoo. The music of “Hush” was arranged by Kamen Rider and Jung Il-hoon from BtoB; the music of “Like A Star” was arranged by MC Mong, Minjae, and Eastwest; and that of “Dangerous Girl” was arranged by Kim Do-hoon and Lee Sang-ho.
