Produce X 101

Hangyul took part in the boy group survival show titled Produce X 101 organized by Mnet in 2019. He joined the show with two other MBK trainees, namely Nam Do-hyon and Kim Yeong-sang. In the first episodes, Lee Hangyul entered Class C. In the group battle evaluation, Lee Hangyul became a member of the EXO – LOVE SHOT group. He said, “I wanted to do “Love Shot,” that could show something sexy and a bit like that.” During the hidden camera project, Lee Hangyul shows no reaction when being surprised by the ghost.

In the position evaluation, he chose “Finesse” for the dance position. He teamed up with Kang Min-hee, Kim Dong-yoon, Kim Si-hoon, Song Hyeong-jun, Joo Chang-wook, and Ham Won-jin. In Episode 10, Lee Hangyul performed a song produced by ZICO titled “Move.” During the mid-term inspection, the team had many injuries. Lee Hangyul was not seen during Choi Young-joon’s lesson, because he got a cold and went to the hospital. During the pre-stage interview, Lee Hangyul said, “This stage is our song. I want to show you some of the more enjoyable stages. And we will be number one. We will be, unconditionally.”

In the final debut evaluation stage, he said, “I’m going to make the song (Boyness) completely mine and try to be like it.” Hangyul had been a trainee for four years when he joined Produce X 101. He said that he will continue to practice. He also said that he wanted to tell everyone that you’ve worked hard so far. “I hope everyone doesn’t give up.”

Lee Hangyul placed 7th in Produce X 101 and advanced to debut with X1. Here are his comments after the ranking announcement, “I really didn’t expect anything. I gave up and I let go of the rope. But now that it’s over, I’m dumbfounded. First, I’ll be a good son to my mother and father. I love you. To our 101 trainees, PD, writer, and all the staff. Thank you so much to our trainers and our four representatives for improving our skills. I’ll do my best. Thank you.”

Debut With X1

On July 19th, 2019, Hangyul debuted as an X1 member by reaching the 7th place in the final ranking announcement ceremony to determine the members who are to debut. He secured the 7th place with 794,411 votes. The total amount of votes was 2,221,045 votes.

On August 27th, 2019, Hangyul officially debuted as a member of X1 with the album Emergency: Quantum Leap and the title track “Flash.”

Unfortunately, on December 3rd, 2019, PD, CP, and some entertainment agency officials in charge of the Produce series were prosecuted due to vote manipulation controversy. The case started on July 19th, 2019, after the finalization of Produce X 101, where viewers questioned the number of votes won by the members. On January 6th, 2020, the agencies representing the members announced that the group had disbanded because they could not reach a unanimous agreement after long discussions between the members and their agencies. Letters and videos that convey the hearts and minds of the members were released on the SNS right after the announcement.

Debut With H&D

On March 30th, 2020, Hangyul set to debut as a member of the duo H&D. Along with his labelmate Nam Do-Hyon, H&D officially debuted on April 21st, 2020. They released their 1st mini-album Soulmate that consists of 10 songs.

H&D also released a digital single titled “Tomorrow Better Than Today.” The song is created for fans while preparing for the first fan meeting Happy Day: Birthday on February 2nd, 2020. Team TENTEN is in charge of producing.
