Daesung’s Solo Debut
After BIG BANG started to gain more recognition through “Lies” in 2007, Daesung began to kick his career as a solo singer through the release of trot song, “Look at Me, GwiSoon” on June 16, 2008. At first, he was hesitant to release a trot song because he was scared to taint BIG BANG’s image.
After that song, Daesung then began releasing several singles. One of the singles is “Cotton Candy” and “Baby Don’t Cry” which successfully occupied the number one and three positions on the Gaon Korea chart.

The success and popularity of Daesung were not only in South Korea but all over the world, including Japan, where he promoted under the name D-Lite.
Since 2013, he has produced three Japanese solo albums and one single. The first album he released won the number 1 position on the Orcon daily album chart. Throughout his career, Daesung has spawned three solo albums, eight singles, and four collaborative singles.
In addition to a solo career, he also entered the world of acting in a feature film titled A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventures (2010). After that, Daesung was picked up as Ha Dong-sung who was the main character in the drama What’s Up (2011). Daesung also frequently appears on variety shows on television such as Running Man, Show! Unfortunately, throughout the length of his career in the Korean Industry, Daesung’s name has been involved in a string of controversial scandals. Firstly, the time he was involved in a driving scandal that caused him to hit a motorcyclist back in 2011.
On May 31, 2011, the BIG BANG vocalist was involved in a car accident on the Yanghwa Bridge. Daesung crashed into a motorcyclist known as Mr. Hyun. Not long after hitting Mr. Hyun, Daesung also hit a taxi that was nearby.
The taxi driver rushed out of his car and helped Mr. Hyun who looked unresponsive and just lying on the ground, quoted from Koreaboo. From this case, YG Entertainment issued a statement that Daesung was on several occasions to reflect and improve and participate in the investigation.
Daesung is suspected of driving his car at a speed of 80 km / h, even though there are signs that it is recommended to drive at a speed of 60 km / h. He hit Mr. Hyun with his Audi brand car and dragged him 22.8 meters along the expressway. Soon he then hit a parked taxi.
Mr. Hyun, the victim of the collision was pronounced dead. The public immediately branded Daesung as a killer. The police did not continue the investigation, because they concluded that Mr. Hyun had a blood alcohol level of 0.186% at the time of the accident. From the accident, Daesung suffered major injuries to his face, neck, and back.

The second scandal was when his name was dragged into the Burning Sun controversy that also involved his groupmate, Seungri, along with many artists’ names such as Jung Joon-young, Roy Kim, Choi Jong-hoon ex-FT Island, CN BLUE’s Lee Jong-hyun, and others.
In 2019, the media reported that a building belonging to Daesung had become a prostitution industry site while he is still serving his mandatory military service.
This illegal business was reported by Channel A on July 25, 2019. According to the report, a building in Gangnam that Daesung bought in 2017 before his military enlistment was turned into a suspicious business that includes prostitution services.
According to reports, the ground floor and the 4th floor of the building which has a total of 8 floors are suspected of being illegal businesses. The elevator in the building cannot be accessed during the day but is open at night. In addition, there is no sign of the business name but it is registered as a restaurant.
The real estate agent for the building told Channel A, “ Daesung is the owner of the building, but he is not involved in the operation. ” They also added that if there was any illegal business they would cancel his contract with Daesung. When they buy a building, they only know that it is for a business which then gives them a business license
The news then made Daesung finally release an official statement. He apologized for the building he owned in the Gangnam area. Daesung said, when the building was purchased, there were already business activities in it. Even so, he admitted that he did not know anything about these illegal activities. “For companies that have been identified as carrying out illegal activities, we will immediately take legal action. I as the owner will do my best,” said the man whose full name is Kang Dae-sung.

The building referred to in the media report is the one I purchased prior to my enlistment, and is still under my name. I was called in for conscription service after purchasing this building, and as a result, there are aspects to maintaining this building that fall to such a poor standard. I would like to apologize once again for this.
When I bought this building, the leaseholder was already running the business inside, so I was not aware of the kinds of illegal businesses the leaseholder was running. Regarding those found guilty of running an illegal business, I plan to take strict legal action. In addition, I promise to do my best to take full responsibility as a building owner.
Even if it is too late, I acknowledge my shortcomings and I reflect on my actions. I will seriously take responsibility for any mistakes. Thank you. “
On the other hand, the owner of the entertainment venue said that Daesung knew about his activities. ” There’s no way he doesn’t know. They came to the location and talked to us in the room,” the man said on the News A program.
He also added that several celebrities who had contact with Daesung also came to the place. “We have to check the facts first,” said the Daesung representative.
