Formed Through Mnet’s Produce 101 Season 3

X1 was formed through the Produce X 101 survival program which aired on Mnet from May 3rd to July 19th, 2019. From 101 trainees, Mnet selected 11 of the 20 trainees who entered the final round through the voting of fans. Meanwhile, the last member referred to as rank X was chosen from the remaining trainees and had the highest vote ranking, if combined from all the episodes that had aired. All X1 members were announced by a live broadcast on Mnet which was held on July 19th, 2019.
After the program ended, X1 signed a contract with Swing Entertainment, the agency that previously oversaw Wanna One. The members will also promote as X1 members for 5 years. Out of those 5 years, 2.5 years will be used exclusively for promotion as X1 members, and the rest can be used by members to do activities with their respective agencies. On August 19th, 2019, X1 announced its fandom name “ONE IT”. ONE IT has two different meanings, namely “want it X1” as the first syllable of the word “want” in Korean (원 하다), and sounds like “one” in English. Meanwhile, the second meaning is “one of it,” thus, the members want to explain that fans are one of the most important people for X1.
Meanwhile, welcoming their official debut, the reality show program titled X1 Flash has been aired by Mnet since August 22nd, 2019. The reality show program was created to show how the X1 members’ activities were approaching debut, and also to show the daily activities of the members of X1. X1 officially debuted on August 27th, 2019, with the release of the song “Flash” of the debut album titled Emergency: Quantum Leap. After officially debuting, X1 held a debut showcase at Gocheok Sky Dome, Seoul on the same date.

Debut Preparation and Performance

In the first episode of the reality show X1 FLASH which aired on Mnet, X1 members shared stories about the difficulties they experienced. Dohyon as the maknae (youngest member), for example. He admitted that although excited about his debut, he felt a strange feeling. Likewise, with Minhee, he said he was worried about everything that would happen after his debut. “My expectations (after debut) were very high, but (after debut), they did not guarantee success,” he said.
In addition, Wooseok also talked about the choreography of their debut song titled “Flash.” According to him, the choreography of this song was an extreme challenge for himself and also for other members. “It was very difficult, so we wondered if we could do the choreography correctly,” said the 1996-born idol. In addition to sharing their challenging debut preparations, the X1 members also talked about their struggle to become an idol. As revealed by the center of X1, Yohan, an outstanding taekwondo athlete, finally decided to become an idol. “I have to wait for the right time to finally convince my parents, to allow me to reach my dream as an idol,” said the man who stole attention through Se7en’s song “Come Back to Me” during the audition of Produce X 101.
When they debuted, X1 released a mini-album titled Emergency: Quantum Leap, also made a debut show-con in Gocheok SkyDome. The X1 members claimed to be very nervous about the concert. “Because this is a very large stage, we are worried about our performance there,” said idol from Woollim Entertainment, Junho. In addition, Hangyul honestly expressed that he was afraid of how people viewed them. Meanwhile, X1 leader, Seungwoo, also said that he felt worried before debut. “I’m worried and also feel a burden.
