Breakthrough as a Singer and Singing
On April 16th, 2015, when Shin Bo-ra appeared on MBC FM4U’s Sunny’s FM Date, she talked about pursuing a career in music, “To stand on stage as a singer was something I never imagined when I debuted as a comedian. I couldn’t imagine that I will stand in front of the public as a singer. I found out that there were people who enjoyed my voice after I debuted. It made me think that I have the ability to promote as a singer as well,” as reported by Allkpop.
Previously, before she became a comedian, she was a part of the South Korean gospel group called Heritage Mass Choir (헤리티지) from 2007 to 2011. She was in charge of Alto at the time.
Through her participation on KBS2’s Qualifications of Men, for the first time, she challenged the soprano as well as the harmonies.
On September 30th, 2010, when she was interviewed with Newsen, she expressed respect for Kolleen Park, the musical director who was the leader of KBS2’s Qualifications of Men South Korean reality-variety show, “Kolleen Park is a great person. Kolleen Park takes care of every single member, it was so sweet.”
Started out as the skit segment on KBS2’s Gag Concert on February 12th, 2012, Shin Bo-ra with fellow comedians such as Park Sung-kwang, Jung Tae-ho, and Yang Seon-il. The skit segment “Brave Guys” was about musical comedy and received the 2012’s Top Excellence Award for ideas. “Brave Guys” became famous and well-known in 2012. They recorded many songs like “Brave Snow White (용감한 백설공주)” Korean OST and “Family” KBS2’s family sitcom OST.
Even, JYJ member Kim Jae-joong praised Shin Bo-ra’s singing ability by dropping a tweet through his own Twitter account on March 4th, 2012, “If the gag woman Shin Bo-ra debuts as a singer, I will certainly buy her album to listen to,” as reported by jyj3.net.
Sadly, on November 30th, 2012, “Brave Guys” announced that they would retire from the music career. Moreover, they had gained popularity for their hip-hop style of music even their music managed to sweep digital charts, and even were donated to various charities, according to Allkpop.
On December 7th, 2012, Brave Guys released the first and the last album titled A to Z which has 10 tracks with “Growing Distant” as the title track.
On February 3rd, 2013, there was a report that the skit segment “Brave Guys” would be discontinued. According to the producers, Brave Guys would be discontinued after their last filming. The last episode was on February 10th, 2013.
After Brave Guys’ retirement report spread through the internet because of bad rumors, Shin Bo-ra did not give up her music career nonetheless. She moved on to release her first solo song titled “Crying with Longing/I Miss You So I Cry” (그리워 운다) for SBS’ 2012 drama Phantom OST on June 14th, 2012.
She also demonstrated her singing ability once again by releasing CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) album titled This Love Part. 2 (사랑합니다) which is a remake of Cool’s member Lee Jae-hoon on November 22nd, 2012. The song was almost like a prayer in which she put her thankful heart and prayer to express her feelings. Her agency, YMC Entertainment, stated, “The earnings made by the album will be partially donated to people in need,” as reported by Hellokpop.
On April 4th, 2013, Shin Bo-ra was featured in Baechigi’s song “Because I Love You” for the SBS drama All About My Romance OST.
Finally, on December 2nd, 2013, Shin Bo-ra officially made a debut as a singer by releasing the digital single album Frozen. The emotional ballad song consists of a retro-melody and goes for a grand sound incorporating sixteen instruments. The song expresses the feelings of a lonely woman who experienced a break-up during the early part of winter. And the Music Video, B1A4 member CNU and Apink member Ha-young participated as lovers in the music video, as reported by Soompi. You can watch the Music Video below!

On April 7th, 2015, Shin Bo-ra stepped back into the music industry as she released a video teaser for her recent song “Mismatch.” She surprised her fans once again by releasing the video teaser that showed a more serious and deep style. And finally, on April 10th, 2015, Shin Bo-ra unveiled the breathtaking Music Video of her latest song “Mismatch” featuring rapper VASCO. The Music Video shows the flashback of a sweet relationship and also shows the same dark and emotional scenes, Shin Bo-ra bares her midriff in sexy outfits while showing off her dance moves, as reported by Koreaboo. Relationship with Kim Gi-ri
Shin Bo-ra and Kim Gi-ri were both comedians from KBS2’s Gag Concert. Interestingly, they also were both from the same class, 25th class in 2010. They had been working together as they appeared on the skit segment “Discoveries in Life” from April 17th, 2011 to June 2nd, 2013. Because of that, they became closer as they worked together.
They started to date in December 2012. Also, when Kim Gi-ri received the Rookie Award at the 2012 KBS Entertainment Awards, he professed his love and gratitude to Shin Bo-ra for always supporting him during his acceptance speech, as reported by Soompi.
Then, they announced their relationship to the public in April 2013. They received a lot of love from the netizens as many netizens supported their cute relationship. Netizens left comments like, “Match so well~ Have a great, long-lasting love ^^*,” “Match well~ The hottest two on Gag Concert. However, sadly, after going public with their relationship in December 2012, Shin Bo-ra and Kim Gi-ri broke up after dating for two years. According to the official statement, “Shin Bo-ra and Kim Gi-ri are no longer dating and have returned to being just colleagues,” as reported by Koreaboo.
One broadcaster insider told the media about the issue, “Shin Bo-ra stepped down from Gag Concert last May (2012) and was busy with her music and acting. I believe they became distant naturally. They broke up recently but they are still supportive of each other,” as reported by Soompi.
Following news of their break-up, many netizens responded with various reactions about Shin Bo-ra and Kim Gi-ri’s relationship that seemed to match well. Some netizens felt that the two should not have gone public first if they did not seriously consider marriage in the future. Well, let’s keep supporting them even though they are not together anymore!
