Pre-debut Story as SM ROOKIES
Seulgi started her career by getting into the music industry through an audition to become an SM Entertainment trainee in 2007 and she underwent a trainee period of 7 years. But before debuting with Red Velvet, Seulgi became a member of SM Rookies in 2013 where this team consisted of SM Entertainment trainees who had never debuted before, or this project was called a pre-debut project. Then, from this project, two groups that are currently quite famous were formed, namely NCT and Red Velvet.
Regarding her pre-debut story, Seulgi once shared her experience as a trainee when she was a guest on SBS’s Radio Power FM. She said:
“I was a trainee for 7 years. I was selected from the audition when I was in 6th grade, and I started living a trainee life during my first year in middle school.”
Seulgi also said that at first, she really enjoyed the process, but then she felt that her quality had decreased, so she finally got back her confidence when she met the other Red Velvet members.
Debut with RED VELVET
Red Velvet was formed in 2007 but there was only one member who filled the group, namely Seulgi, and she was also the first member of Red Velvet to be revealed by SM Entertainment. Then, on August 1st, 2014, Seulgi officially debuted with Red Velvet along with Irene, Joy, and Wendy. They made their debut stage appearance through the music show titled Music Bank which was aired on KBS2, and they performed their debut single “Happiness”.
The “Happiness” music video gained more than 2 million views on YouTube before the music video was removed due to controversy over the music video’s background images. Red Velvet also succeeded in reaching the 4th position on the Billboard World Digital Songs Chart, and they’re the first K-Pop girl group that made it to the Billboard chart with their debut single. After successfully debuting and becoming popular, Seulgi and her group then released their 2nd digital single entitled “Be Natural” on October 3rd, 2014. “Be Natural” is a remake song of their senior group, S.E.S, and the 2nd single also made it to 33rd place on the Gaon Digital Chart and also reached number 6 on the Billboard World Digital Songs Chart. Red Velvet also won an award at the Seoul Music Awards and Golden Disk Awards in the Rookie of the Year category, and until now, Red Velvet are considered to be one of the most popular girl groups.
Solo Activity
Seulgi started her solo activities by starring in SM Entertainment’s musical School Oz, playing the lead role of Dorothy. Seulgi has also taken part in the soundtrack of various televisions series by releasing several songs, such as the soundtrack of the drama Blade & Soul, a song titled “You, Just Like That”.
Seulgi became one of the cast members of a variety show that aired on JTBC, namely Secret Unnie (2018) with Sunmi, and previously, Seulgi was also a member of a girl group called Girls Next Door which was incorporated in a project namely Idol Drama Operation Team in 2017 along with several other girl group members such as Moonbyul, YooA, Jeon Somi, Sujeong, and D.ana.

In mid-2020, Seulgi officially debuted as a member of Red Velvet’s first subunit with Irene and they released an EP titled Monster. Seulgi and Irene then were busy with their schedule as a subunit. A few months later, that is around September, Seulgi was suddenly accused of being a bully when she was in high school. The rumor was written by an anonymous Twitter account to make her fans get emotional. Until the hashtag #RespectSeulgi occupied the trending topic on Twitter.
The account also admitted to being depressed by the incident and hating every time Seulgi appeared on television, and the account said that the Idol who bullied her/him was a graduate of SOPA (Seoul School of Performing Arts) in 2013. The Idol is also an artist of an agency with the initials S Entertainment.
