Romeo (Hangul: 로미오; Japanese: ロメオ), often stylized as ROMEO, is a South Korean boy group that debuted in May 2015 under Pony Canyon Korea and CT Entertainment. Outside of the four members who participated in Mix Nine, the group is also composed of three other members: Seunghwan, Minsung, and Kangmin. Controversy

In February 2018, a Japanese fan shared screenshots of her messaging conversation with Milo on an online community and the case soon turned into controversy. In the messages, the other party (assumed to be Milo) suggested to the fan that while he is traveling in Japan, they should stay at a hotel together. The fan has been described in reports as a minor.

Romeo’s agency CT Entertainment posted the following official statement on the group’s fan cafe on February 20th, 2018, about the matter:

“Hello, this is CT Entertainment. We sincerely express our apology for causing fans concern due to the recent scandal. Milo is reflecting deeply upon this matter in which he showed immature behavior as a public figure, and he will be taking time to self-reflect for a while. We once again bow our heads and apologize to the fans, and we will do our best to ensure that no such scandals arise again in the future.”

After confirming his behavior, a few months later Milo stated that he would be enlisting in the military soon to carry out his mandatory service.

On May 2nd, 2018, Milo posted a handwritten letter to the group’s official Twitter account, announcing his decision and apologizing for his past incident.

He wrote:

“Hello, this is Romeo’s Milo. While worrying about not knowing how I should greet you all up until now, I have come with a handwritten letter like this to greet everyone for the first time in a while. I want to bow my head in apology once again to all the fans who must have been very hurt by the reprehensible incident two months ago. I have been reflecting on my immature actions and the guilt I felt from disappointing everyone who has always supported me.

Also, recently. I have made the difficult decision to enlist after I received my draft notice and the call of my country. I would like to apologize to the fans, who must be surprised, for announcing such sudden news like this.

I was happy meeting my members and our fans while carrying out Romeo’s activities. Now, I plan to temporarily cast aside my title as ‘Romeo’s Milo’ and faithfully carry out my duty to my nation as Kim Min-hak [Milo’s real name].

I ask that you kindly understand that I have come to this decision after much consideration.

I will return as a changed and more matured Kim Min Hak. I want to thank you for always supporting me, and I will strive to stand in front of you again in good health. Thank you.”

Military Service

Milo was the first member of Romeo who enlisted. After confirming his scandalous behavior, Milo posted a handwritten letter on May 2nd, 2018, to the group’s official Twitter account, announcing his decision to enlist in the military and to carry out his mandatory service.

After that, Kyle was the next to go. He announced on his Instagram that he would enlist on April 8th, 2019, and would not be promoting with the other members for the upcoming Neverland Live in Japan. As a result, Romeo’s Neverland Live in Japan only featured 5 members.

ROMEO Involved In A Car Accident

On March 30th, 2017, at 9:24 p.m. KST, Romeo was involved in a minor car collision and had to cancel an event due to the accident. Romeo’s agency, CT Entertainment, posted on Twitter to reassure fans and apologize after the group had to cancel an event due to a car accident.

They wrote, “We express our apologies for the same-day cancellation of the fan signing event today (March 30th, 2017) in Jamsil. The Romeo members were on their way to take part in the fan signing event when there was a minor collision.”

“The members quickly went to a nearby clinic to receive physical exams, and thankfully, there were no major injuries discovered. However, in order to be safe, they are currently on the way to the hospital to receive thorough examinations.”

“Both the Romeo members and our company are very sorry that the fan signing event was canceled after it had already begun due to this sudden accident.”

On the same day, at 10:27 p.m. KST, the agency posted again on Romeo’s Twitter account to share an update on the members. They stated, “Thankfully, the results of the additional examinations at the hospital show that the Romeo members have no injuries other than slight bruising and muscle pain. We apologize for causing concern.”

The agency went on to state that the group’s planned appearance in the March 31st, 2017, episode of the KBS Music Bank and their schedules for Saturday and Sunday will be carried out as normal, although the members will not be participating in the usual official entrance and press photo time on the way into Music Bank.

CT Entertainment once again apologized to fans for making them worry following the news of the accident and promised to do their best to ensure that the members can quickly recover.

Yunsung wrote, “Our fans Juliet must have been very surprised like we were… I’m upset about it… Since we are really okay, you don’t need to worry about us a lot. I apologize again and thank you.”

Latest News

In February 2020, The Korean Business Research Institute revealed that month’s brand reputation rankings for male idol groups. And the good news is Romeo was on the list! They were ranked 28th in the February list!

The rankings were determined through an analysis of the consumer participation, media coverage, interaction, and community indexes of various boy groups, using big data collected from January 6th to February 7th, 2020.

Unsurprisingly, BTS topped the list for the 21st consecutive month with a brand reputation index of 12,787,271, while EXO maintained its position in second place with a brand reputation index of 3,911,595, and so does Super Junior which rose to third place with a total index of 2,289,821 for February, marking a 25.52 percent increase in their score since last month.
