About The 2019 SBS Gayo Daejun
Basically, the SBS Gayo Daejun is an annual show that was first established in 1997. It is a television music festival aired on SBS – Seoul Broadcasting System. Well, in fact, it is not exactly a festival, but more of an award show, which was actually discontinued in 2014 and was then revived two years later.
The 2019 SBS Gayo Daejun took place on December 25th, 2019, coinciding with Christmas Day. The event was held at the Gocheok Sky Dome, Seoul, South Korea. The hosts of the event were Jun Hyun-moo and AOA’s Seolhyun. A lot of famous artists were lined up at the event, and some of them even surprised and impressed the fans and audience with their special stage performance.
The show was broadcast live starting at 5.30 p.m. KST. Since the event took place on Christmas Day, many of the artists appeared on stage in a Christmas theme, such as wearing Chistmas-inspired outfits, carrying Christmas decorations, performing Christmas songs, and a lot more. Additionally, a red carpet session took place at the 2019 SBS Gayo Daejun where the artists had lined up to meet and greet the fans who also attended the red carpet session.

Controversy
Even though the 2019 SBS Gayo Daejun was seemingly held successfully, apparently, an incident had happened beforehand that arose controversy about the event. The incident was related to the safety of the artists who were part of the show, such as RED VELVET’s Wendy’s accident and MAMAMOO’s Solar’s accident during rehearsals.
RED VELVET Wendy Rehearsal Incident
On December 25th, 2019, before the 2019 SBS Gayo Daejun was officially aired, some of the artists were doing their rehearsal including RED VELVET for their live performance. Unfortunately, one of the members, Wendy, fell off from the stage during the rehearsal getting injured and requiring a rush to the hospital. Due to the incident, RED VELVET’s live performance at the event was canceled.
Then SM Entertainment explained Wendy’s situation at the time. She had fractures on her right pelvis and wrist, and also some injuries on her face. When the fans heard about the news, they were really mad at SBS because they thought that the safety on the stage wasn’t well-prepared. The fans also got disappointed because they wouldn’t be able to watch RED VELVET’s live performance.
And finally, SBS gave an official statement and an apology to RED VELVET’s Wendy, her family, her fans, and the rest of the members of RED VELVET, regarding Wendy’s incident while she was rehearsing for the 2019 SBS Gayo Daejun. In the apology statement, SBS also explained that SBS staff and entertainment division had been working along with SM Entertainment right after the incident happened and did their best for Wendy’s injury treatment.
Even MAMAMOO’s Solar expressed her concern for RED VELVET’s Wendy health during MAMAMOO’s V Live session. She wished Wendy to get better soon and revealed that Wendy is someone who she really adores. And for a recent update, SM Entertainment revealed that RED VELVET will continue their activities for the time being without Wendy, while Wendy is focused on her injury treatment.
MAMAMOO Solar Red Carpet Incident
Another unpleasant incident happened at the red carpet event of the 2019 SBS Gayo Daejun involving MAMAMOO’s Solar. The accident happened as MAMAMOO were lined up to appear on the red carpet and take some photos, but suddenly, Solar fell down on the floor.
Even though the moment when she fell down wasn’t caught on camera, her scream when she was fell was really loud and drew the attention of all the present, including both artists, reporters, fans. Fortunately, she didn’t hurt herself and immediately got back on her feet and even the host of the 2019 SBS Gayo Daejun later revealed that she is alright.
RBW Entertainment (MAMAMOO’s agency) also gave their official statement and revealed that Solar was alright and didn’t get any injury. They also said that they would be taking better care of their artist’s safety in the future.
And also, not only RED VELVET’s Wendy and MAMAMOO’s Solar were involved in an incident, but other artists also experienced some kind of unpleasant incident as well. It was reported that BTS’ V, ITZY’s Yeji, and NCT 127’s Taeyong were seen almost falling off due to the slippery stage according to the reports of some sources.
Stage Safety Worry Fans During Performance
Like we have been explained previously, there were also other artists who were caught on camera almost falling off the stage as well. Due to this unfortunate safety issue, many fo the fans went mad with worry for their beloved idols’ safety. Moreover, when the news about RED VELVET’s Wendy fall during the rehearsal was released, and that she is, in fact, injured, and MAMAMOO’s Solar falling during the red carpet, it brought about a wave of fans’ concerns.
Even during the live broadcast of the 2019 SBS Gayo Daejun, the fans were worrying about the idols’ safety on stage because there was also some footage as proof that the stage was kind of slippery which also made the idols slide or stumble during their performance. There was also news that TWICE and Chungha even showed their concern and fear of performing on the stage due to the lack of stage safety.
It was also reported that ITZY’s Yeji, NCT 127’s Taeyong, TWICE, MONSTA X, and BTS’ V and Jin were caught on the camera almost falling off and stumbling while performing on the stage. Even though some of them acted like they were doing an ice skating routine, it was actually due to the slippery stage.

All of the fans of the artists that were lineup demanded an apology from SBS, even more so after RED VELVET’s Wendy’s accident. They were also really disappointed by the lack of stage safety for their idols, especially as they were able to see for themselves the moments where stage safety affected the artists’ performances. They hope that SBS won’t do the same mistake for the next SBS Gayo Daejun in the future.
