Nam Ji-Hyun Changed Into Son Ji-Hyun, Let’s Get Closer With Her
Previously a leader of the popular girl-group 4Minute, Jihyun, previously known as Nam Ji-Hyun, is reported to have officially changed her name into Son Ji-Hyun for her new career path as an actress, back in December, 2017. Now she is surrently working as an actress under the agency Artist Company, which is known as one of the top Korean Entertainment companies, formed by veteran actors Jung Woo-Sung and Lee Jung-Jae.

After seven years together, the members of 4Minute decided to disband the group and go their separate ways. Jihyun, herself, even ended her contract with Cube Entertainment. Not long after the disbandment, her new agency, Artist Company, announced that she would be promoting under a new name “Son Ji-Hyun”. She explained that she changed her name by using her mother’s surname, to start anew.
She confirmed that she just wanted a new path and a fresh start as an actress, but some netizens thought the change might be because there’s another actress named Nam Ji-Hyun, who is five years younger and more popular than she is. Her explanation came by way of a written letter which said that it’s a decision she came to after long consideration. She said even though it may not make things different, she hoped fans would support and bless her.

After accumulating acting experience through various projects such as the film The Youth, and the dramas Love Cells and My Little Baby, she started promoting as a rookie actress all over again. She still thinks she’s lacking, but she is trying her best by auditioning for as many roles as possible. She took roles in The Strongest Delivery Man and Grand Prince, but neither drama made much of a success.

The Truth Behind 4Minute’s Disbandment
On June 13, 2016, it was announced that 4Minute would be disbanding following their contract expiration, and the only member who signed a new contract as a soloist was Hyuna. Meanwhile, Jihyun joined members Jiyoon, Gayoon, and Soohyun in leaving Cube Entertainment, after failing to negotiate a new contract. No clear reason has ever been given about why the group decided to end their career while the group was at its peak.
There have been many speculations as to the reasons behind 4Minute’s dissolution. Some netizens came up with their own theories about why the group broke up, with talk of Hyuna “stealing” too much of the spotlight being considered the most likely reason. Considering how much attention Hyuna’s brought to their group since their debut days, envy of her popularity seemed a likely cause. Netizens concluded that Cube Entertainment was too focused on taking care of Hyuna’s solo career.
Meanwhile, the exposing article continues on to state that 4Minute’s recent albums were ‘failures’ to their agency. As a result, the agency saw 4Minute as a non-profitable group, and they chose profit over music. As for why Hyuna was re-signed, she was still seen as a profitable entity for CUBE Entertainment as her solo career is very successful. As a matter of fact, Hyuna’s song “Bubble Pop” is considered one of the top 10 songs responsible for the sudden boom of the Hallyu Wave.
About 4Minute’s Disbandment From The Former Members’ Perspective
Some time after the disbandment, one of the former members, Jiyoon, explained there were various reasons for why they decided to disband. Jiyoon (now promoting as Jenyer) explained her decision to leave the agency was mainly because she came to realize that she wanted to continue her career in her way, without following any set rules from the agency. She also revealed “A part of me wanted to continue 4minute, but the members had different paths they wanted to take. It was all different; one member wanted to pursue acting, one wanted to sing, and another wanted to do different music than being an idol”.
On July 29, 2016, when Hyuna had a press conference for her comeback, she was asked about 4Minute and its disbandment. Hyuna first said she was upset by the way people talk as if 4Minute didn’t exist. When asked what the members said after they decided to disband, Hyuna was cautious, saying she could only speak for herself and no one else. She explained that the members, who have all worked toward the same dream for seven years, have decided to now head toward their individual dreams and support each other.
Jihyun also discussed inn an interview how she felt at the time of 4minute’s disbandment. She shared, “I knew it was going to happen, so I was upset for a short while but that was it,” and added, “After disbandment, I missed going on stage but now it’s all a good memory. I want to focus on my acting career for a while without any music promotions.” Regarding the relationships between the former 4minute members, Jihyun said that there were feelings of sorrow at first, especially with Hyuna. However, Jihyun went on to say “As time goes by, I have come to understand Hyuna more and more. Our (Kakao) group chat is still alive.”
Meanwhile, Sohyun, the maknae, is currently taking her first steps as an actress. She revealed her thoughts on the changes she is facing.
“Everyone has different thoughts and there’s also the issue of the agency. Even though it’s okay for everyone to make choices that benefit themselves, it’s still a bit sad. I was like that as well. Unlike in the past, when I put the team before myself, I started thinking about myself before the team. What pained me the most was that thinking about my own needs wasn’t wrong. It would be a lie to say that I don’t have any regrets. Sometimes I hear our songs playing in the streets, and some people recognize me and say, ‘Hey, it’s 4Minute.’ I do feel some regret, but I’m going to keep it as a good memory. I’ll think about going on stage again when the opportunity comes. For now, I’m planning on working as an actress, but there is a possibility of my return to music“.
