This drama follows the lives of six university students, that come from various areas of South Korea, such as Chungcehong Province, Jeolla Province, and Gyeongsang Province, but live together in Sinchon, Seoul, in a boarding house run by a family whose daughter is named Sung Na-jung (played by Go Ara), with a background set in the 90s.
The drama goes back and forth, between the past and the present, alternating the stories between 1994, the era when the famous K-Pop group Seo Taiji and Boys were at the peak of their career, the Sampoong Department Store collapse and the birth of the Korean Basketball League, and 2013, making the viewers curious about who will become Sung Na-jung’s husband in the future.
Yoo Yeon-seok played the role of Chilbong, which means Seven Shut-outs, and he is the number one pitcher of Yonsei University’s baseball team and has a crush on Na-jung. Jung Woo played Sseureki, which means Garbage or Trash, and he is a medical student who’s also Sung Na-jung’s late older brother’s best friend that grew up together with the Sung siblings. Kim Sung-kyun played Samcheonpo, which refers to his hometown in South Gyeongsang Province, and he is known by his looks that seem older than his actual age. Son Ho-jun played the role of Haitai, which refers to his baseball team, Haitai Tiger. He comes from a wealthy family where his father is the CEO of a bus company, Suncheon Transportation Inc. Baro played the character of Binggeureu, which means Smiley and refers to the baseball team Biggrae Eagles. He is Chilbong’s cousin and Sseureki’s junior at the school. Min Do-hee played Jo Yoo-jin, who is a fan of Seo Taiji and Boys.

On December 5th, 2018, South Korean television broadcasting station, tvN, announced their new program named Coffee Friends on their official Instagram account and have set the premiere date in January 2019.

The variety show is set in a coffee shop run by Yoo Yeon-seok and Son Ho-jun in a tangerine farm on Jeju Island. The profits of the shop are going to be donated to a charity event which is inspired by the close friends and donation project.
