TWICE 9th EP More & More

TWICE
creativedisc.com

TWICE finally returned to the world of music by releasing a mini-album titled More & More on Monday, June 1st, 2020, at 16.00 WIB. This comeback is TWICE’s first return after eight months since they released their song “Feel Special” on September 23rd, 2019. This release was a collaboration between JYP Entertainment and Republic Records. This is their 9th EP since their debut in 2015.

Reported by Soompi, the main song “More & More” describes the emotions felt by two people who are at the beginning of a relationship where they are experiencing the maximum joy and sweetness as well as the desire to increasingly want each other. The song is filled with tropical house music composed by Uzaechi Eminke, Justin Tranter, Julia Michaels, and Zara Larsson, while BIBI and Park Jin-young exclusively wrote the lyrics.

Like the previous TWICE albums, there are high expectations for this album More & More. Understandably, in recent years, TWICE can be said to be one of the best girl groups in South Korea today.

Background Release

The news of TWICE’s comeback was first announced on April 28th, 2020, where they revealed “More & More” as their upcoming single title. Later, they changed their Twitter banner with the name More & More and announced that would also be the title of their 9th EP. The contents of the three physical album versions and the pre-order date was then announced on May 8th, 2020. Ten days later, JYP Entertainment revealed its tracklist through its official Twitter account on May 18th, 2020. Finally, on June 1st, 2020, at 6 PM KST, the album was released. A YouTube Live Stream was also aired at 8 PM on the same day.

The album has a dual-concept which represents the innocent nature and alluring hippie vibe. The overall message and keyword for this album is the desire for more and more.

Album Sales & Chart

Within 24 hours of its releases, More & More managed to break several music records!

The first record that was successfully broken by the TWICE More & More album was the album booking record.

About three days before it was released, JYP Entertainment announced a fantastic order number for the album More & More. The album had been ordered as many as 500 thousand copies, so this album is the album with the most orders in the history of TWICE.

Not only that, but this album also became a girl group album with the highest number of orders. So even prior to its release, the album More & More showed something promising.

The second record that was successfully broken by More & More was that this album officially became a girl group album with the most sales on the first day.

Data from Hanteo notes that on the first day of sales, the album More & More sold 274,472 copies. This record beat their personal record achieved with the release of “Feel Special,” where “Feel Special” sold 61,066 copies.

The first day of sales of More & More successfully subverted IZONE’s album BLOOM record which was previously recorded as a girl group album with the best first-day sales at 183,975 copies. This note also made TWICE the first girl group to sell more than 200 thousand copies on the first day of sales.

The next record that was successfully broken by TWICE’s More & More is the domination of the iTunes chart.

In less than 24 hours, More & More managed to perch on the top of the iTunes Top Albums Chart in 30 countries, including Brazil, Korea, Japan, and Indonesia.

This record is TWICE’s best record on the iTunes platform because previous albums have never topped the chart in 30 countries.

Not only the album broke the record on iTunes, but More & More also broke the record on the South Korean music platform, Melon.

More & More is claimed to be the fastest girl group album that managed to top the Melon chart in 2020. It took less than 24 hours for the album to top the chart.

This note can be said to be a special record because Melon is one chart that is difficult to conquer. Being able to top the chart in less than 24 hours can be said to be an extraordinary achievement.

The song also topped Japan’s Top 100 Music Line and six other TWICE songs managed to dominate the top 10 on the charts, as reported by Naver. A few hours after the release of their mini-album, at exactly 8:00 p.m. KST, the song “More & More” succeeded in topping the Korean number 1 realtime charts, such as Genie, FLO, Bugs, and Soribada.

On Gaon, TWICE even became the first and only 3rd-generation K-Pop girl group so far to become a half a million-seller on the site.

Meanwhile, More & More also successfully debuted on Billboard 200 and it is the first time in the US Chart and a first as well for a JYP Entertainment artist.

Their comeback was also celebrated by Spotify. A photo of the Best Selling K-Pop Girl Group’s billboard spotted at New York’s Times Square sponsored by Spotify was uploaded on TWICE’s official Twitter account on June 9th, 2020.

On the same day and time as the release of their mini-album (June 2nd, 2020) TWICE also launched a music video for “More & More” on the official channel of JYP Entertainment. With a duration of four minutes, TWICE’s members appeared in typical tropical dresses with a background of forests, water, and animals in the MV.

Comeback Stage

Twice finally held their first comeback stage after 8 months on the M Countdown episode from June 4th, 2020. This comeback stage was special since it marked their full formation with Mina since she didn’t participate in the “Feel Special” promotion due to her anxiety condition.

TWICE Momo Real Singing During The Encore

TWICE’s victory at Show Champion on June 10th, 2020, was immediately added to the long list of achievements of TWICE for the More & More comeback.

After bringing home the winning trophy, TWICE conducted an encore session on the Show Champion music program where all the members sang the song “More & More” live.

When it was Momo’s turn, the voice of Super Junior’s Kim Heechul’s girlfriend caught the attention of the K-netizens.

When singing her part of the song, Momo’s voice was a bit shaky and unstable. When she finished her part, she looked surprised and laughed at her own voice, then she and Na-yeon looked at each other. It seemed that the Japanese idol was also confused about why her voice sounded like that.

Torn pieces of the video when Momo sings “More & More” live then went viral on social media. A lot of K-netizens commented and criticized her voice badly saying that she needs to train more.

Below are a few comments from netizens on the online community Pann Nate:

“Tzuyu and Mina sing well but Momo … I can’t protect her. To be honest, the biggest problem is that she doesn’t know her level and has a lot of greed to sing. She sometimes wants to rap too, wants to be in the unit, and even during concerts, she takes Nayeon’s parts. There is no hope.”

“It seems like she was also surprised by her own voice.”

“They are very bad at singing live.”

“Momo even appeared on the I Can See Your Voice program to determine whether that person can sing well or is deaf.”

Meanwhile, TWICE kept performing on weekly music programs during the full month of June.

TWICE Singing With Helium Voice

On the June 12th, 2020 broadcast of KBS’ Music Bank, TWICE’s “More & More” reached another first place after winning on MBC’s Show Champion and Mnet’s M Countdown in the same week. What makes this trophy special is that it’s also their 100th win since their debut in 2015. They’re the only girl group beside Girls’ Generation who has reached this achievement.

On the encore stage, the girls made a hilarious performance as they sang the helium version of their song. “We will work harder. Thank you, ONCE, for loving us,” they commented on stage.

In addition, they also thanked their fans on their official Twitter account by uploading photos from their first-ever music show win alongside their most recent win.

“First-ever first place. And the 100th first place. One in a million ONCE, who shine brighter than anything on earth and who are always with TWICE,” the caption read.

Along with the caption was a part of the lyrics from their song, “One in a Million,” and the sentence, “Congratulations, ONCE, and also TWICE.”

The members also thanked their fans personally through their official Instagram account.

One post revealed two group photos of Na-yeon, Sana, Tzuyu, and Dahyun. The caption read, “Thank you so much to ONCE who allowed us to place first!!”

A series of selfies featuring Jeong-yeon, Dahyun, and Momo were also uploaded. The caption read, “Congratulations ONCE on your 100th first place! Even though you’re far away, I really, really feel your support. They keep telling me not to lower the window on our way home, so I couldn’t, but I really, really miss you too. I am always thankful, and I really cherish you!! Since I’m in a good mood today, I’m going to upload lots.”

Jihyo also shared her photos and words with members, “ONCE whom I miss! It would’ve been so much better if you could’ve been with us today. Although that’s regretful, today is still such a happy day! I know you all enjoyed yourselves at home. I hope you all have a party at home today! When our promotions are over, we’ll do the same in our dorm. Congratulations to ONCE and TWICE. We’ll do our performance well tomorrow too! Thank you and I love you ONCE.”

“TWICE’s 100th first place at Music Bank. Today is a really a x100 meaningful day. I was an MC and I got first place!!! Our ONCE are the best!!! Thank you,” Dahyun also joined the members by expressing her gratitude.

And finally, Momo shared selfies with Sana and Na-yeon and commented, “Congratulations ONCE on your 100th first place today. It’s really all thanks to ONCE… It’s because we have such strong and reliable ONCE that ONCE and all nine TWICE members can have such thankful moments like this… ONCE, I am always so, so thankful and apologetic. TWICE, ONCE, let’s do well in the future too.”

Chaeyeong Sleeve Tattoo

TWICE fans probably already know that Chaeyoung has some unique tattoos. The tattoos come in various forms, from carrots to flowers, and are scattered in various parts of her body.

Until now, all the Chaeyoung tattoos that fans have seen are generally small, so it’s easy for staff to hide them whenever Chaeyoung appears on television. But recently, fans discovered a new tattoo that was bigger than the tattoos they had seen in the past.

When the first episode of the series, “More & More,” which is part of TWICE TV, was released on June 9th, 2020, through the official YouTube channel, fans could see the behind the scenes of their latest comeback.

While dancing their music video choreography, the members were wrapped in white clothes where Chae-young wore a long-sleeved crop top with slightly transparent sleeves. On the right upper arm, we can see the dark color behind the fabric of her clothes.

On closer inspection, the dark color on Chae-young’s right upper arm looks like a large tattoo covering her entire arm. Fans are increasingly convinced that it is a tattoo after watching TWICE’s performance on M! Countdown.

At that time, Chaeyoung who wore an orange blouse with an open back also seemed to use tape on the upper right arm near the back. This tape is generally used to cover tattoos when idols appear on television shows. The lines of tape also seem to match the lines of Chae-young’s new sleeve tattoo.

Fans have speculated that this large tattoo on Chaeyoung’s upper arm could also be the reason why she is the only TWICE member who wears a long sleeve top in the “More & More” dance practice video.

Nayeon Rap In Sweet Summer Day

There is something new and unique in TWICE’s latest album More & More. Among the six pop EDM nuanced songs released by TWICE, a number of TWICE members also participated in the song making process of this album!

For example, Na-yeon wrote the lyrics of “Make Me Go,” while “Sweet Summer Day” was written by Jeongyeon and Chaeyoung (the rap part).

“We want to hear that (the album) feels ‘new.’ We want to hear that TWICE continues to show growth and that people are eager to hear, what we will do in the next album,” Nayeon said in one of the interviews.

But what makes fans also excited is the rap part of the song “Sweet Summer Day” where Na-yeon participated as the rapper for the first time! While she was usually singing the chorus and main vocal part, she did something different in this comeback.

Check out her short part in the performance below!
