Everything You Should Know About Mnet Latest Boy Band from the Produce 101 series Produce X 101 – X1

X1 is a newcomer boy band formed through the Produce X 101 survival program. Just like in the previous seasons, Produce X 101 is followed by 101 trainees from various agencies and independent applicants, including trainees who have debuted, both solo and debuted as members of boy bands. After 12 episodes finished, 11 trainees were chosen to debut as X1 members, namely Han Seung-woo, Cho Seung-Yeon, Kim Woo-Seok, Kim Yo-Han, Lee Han-Gyul, Cha Jun-Ho, Son Dong-Pyo, Kang Min-Hee, Lee Eun-Sang, Song Hyeong-Jun, and Nam Do-Hyun. The group debuted on August 27th, 2019, with the release of the mini-album Emergency: Quantum Leap with the song “Flash” serving as the title song.

Formed Through Mnet Produce 101 Season 3

X1 was formed through the Produce X 101 survival program which aired on Mnet from May 3rd to July 19th, 2019. From 101 trainees, Mnet selected 11 of the 20 trainees who entered the final round through the voting of fans. Meanwhile, the last member referred to as rank X was chosen from the remaining trainees and had the highest vote ranking, if combined from all the episodes that had aired. All X1 members were announced by a live broadcast on Mnet which was held on July 19th, 2019.

After the program ended, X1 signed a contract with Swing Entertainment, the agency that previously oversaw Wanna One. The members will also promote as X1 members for 5 years. Out of those 5 years, 2.5 years will be used exclusively for promotion as X1 members, and the rest can be used by members to do activities with their respective agencies. On August 19th, 2019, X1 announced its fandom name “ONE IT”. ONE IT has two different meanings, namely “want it X1” as the first syllable of the word “want” in Korean (원 하다), and sounds like “one” in English. Meanwhile, the second meaning is “one of it,” thus, the members want to explain that fans are one of the most important people for X1.

Meanwhile, welcoming their official debut, the reality show program titled X1 Flash has been aired by Mnet since August 22nd, 2019. The reality show program was created to show how the X1 members’ activities were approaching debut, and also to show the daily activities of the members of X1. X1 officially debuted on August 27th, 2019, with the release of the song “Flash” of the debut album titled Emergency: Quantum Leap. After officially debuting, X1 held a debut showcase at Gocheok Sky Dome, Seoul on the same date.

Debut Preparation and Performance

In the first episode of the reality show X1 FLASH which aired on Mnet, X1 members shared stories about the difficulties they experienced. Dohyon as the maknae (youngest member), for example. He admitted that although excited about his debut, he felt a strange feeling. Likewise, with Minhee, he said he was worried about everything that would happen after his debut. “My expectations (after debut) were very high, but (after debut), they did not guarantee success,” he said.

In addition, Wooseok also talked about the choreography of their debut song titled “Flash.” According to him, the choreography of this song was an extreme challenge for himself and also for other members. “It was very difficult, so we wondered if we could do the choreography correctly,” said the 1996-born idol. In addition to sharing their challenging debut preparations, the X1 members also talked about their struggle to become an idol. As revealed by the center of X1, Yohan, an outstanding taekwondo athlete, finally decided to become an idol. “I have to wait for the right time to finally convince my parents, to allow me to reach my dream as an idol,” said the man who stole attention through Se7en’s song “Come Back to Me” during the audition of Produce X 101.

When they debuted, X1 released a mini-album titled Emergency: Quantum Leap, also made a debut show-con in Gocheok SkyDome. The X1 members claimed to be very nervous about the concert. “Because this is a very large stage, we are worried about our performance there,” said idol from Woollim Entertainment, Junho. In addition, Hangyul honestly expressed that he was afraid of how people viewed them. Meanwhile, X1 leader, Seungwoo, also said that he felt worried before debut. “I’m worried and also feel a burden. I’m also happy. So many feelings that make me overwhelmed,” said Seungwoo.

At the end of the show, X1 members, Wooseok and Seungyoun asked fans called One It to wait for the song “It’s Okay.” According to Wooseok, the song really conveyed the feelings of the X1 members. “This song comforts me, that the future will be better because I am starting a new journey now,” Seungyoun added.

Mnet Voting Scandal

South Korean police have arrested Produce X 101 program director (PD), Ahn Joon-young, who admitted manipulating the voting during an examination on Tuesday (5/11/2019). IZ*ONE and X1 idol groups born from the program were affected.

A new boy band from the third season of Produce 101, Produce X 101 was formed on broadcast dated July 19th, 2019. With the name X1, the boy band consisted of 11 people and was born based on the combined results of text voting and online voting on the final night. Paid online voting is sent by the audience during the program. After the final night of Produce X 101, fans compared the total voting of the winning trainees and suspected manipulation of the voting text. They saw a difference in the distance between the results of the trainees’ voting.

Mnet denies any speculation of voting manipulation in the final night of Produce X 101. A statement from a source from Mnet, “We are aware that there is a suspicion in the text voting. So we continue to check the data internally, but that does not exist at all. There is no problem with the text voting and there is no manipulation.” Following the controversy, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s Cyber investigation team said they had received a written request to investigate Mnet. They have also begun an internal investigation into the Produce X 101 program regarding the alleged manipulation.

The police conducted a search and seizure at the Produce X 101 office. The police then secured the belongings from the office of the staff at the CJ Entertainment building in Sangam, South Korea. In the midst of controversy, the boy band formed by Produce X 101, X1, still made its debut. After being selected from the Produce X 101 audition, eleven members who joined the X1 debuted with the song “Flash” from the mini-album Quantum Leap and released their music video. However, as the case of manipulation progressed, many requested X1 to be dissolved.

“We are investigating the fourth season (Produce X 101) of the Produce 101 series, we are also looking for whether there have been similar violations in the previous three seasons,” police said quoted from Soompi, Monday (11/02/2019). The first season began with the name Produce 101, Produce 101 season 2, and the third Produce 48. Report from SpoTV News, the police have also visited and investigated several agencies whose trainees have participated in Produce 48. From the Produce 48 audition, the girl group IZ*ONE was born that has 12 members and debuted on October 29th, 2018, with the song “La Vie en Rose.”

The police are suspicious of the producers, one of whom is PD Ahn Joon-young. “We have checked the bank accounts of the producers. There are still interests to be sought so we cannot confirm whether or not there is a money transaction,” the police said. On November 5th, 2019, the Seoul Central District Court examined whether the arrest warrant was made valid. In the afternoon, Chief Judge Myung Jae-kwon made a final decision that the arrest warrant for Ahn Joon-young was considered legal and an arrest was made. Ahn Joon-young then confessed to voting manipulation. Another producer Kim Yong-bum was also arrested by the police.
